unlocked in Israel
« on: February 25, 2010, 10:57:25 PM »
I cashed in on a $30 unlocked GSM quad worldphone - Moto F3 from Amazon. I bought a prepaid cellcom simcard. What a bust! The Cellcom people verified that the card was active but with both phone and live support in Israel they couldn't get the phone to work. Where did I go wrong?

What message do you get on the phone?

(you don't need to travel to a country in order to realize that its not (properly) unlocked

something from cellcom to the effect that the call couldn't be completed. the techs told us that the simcard was active though. is there a way to straighten this out back in the states?

the good news is that I verified the phone IS unlocked. The bad news is, I was advised, that it's only "partially" unlocked for the USA.

Thats why I asked you what it says on the phone. If locked, it should say while turning it on that your sim is incorrect.

are you sure that the sim that you are using, isnt from a kosher-phone?

Never heard of that before.
Are you sure you bought a quad-band phone?

Tri-band will also do.

OP mentioned he bought a quad-band.
Seems like he may have only bought a dual-band.

there is the Samsung U100, which is much thinner.

This dual phone is made for the states. european (or israeli) phones which are dual need to be 850-1800.

Some operators use 850 even in europe, it would work by them.

so I splurged on a quad phone for around $40. this time - Ta, Da! - it worked great. you get your number to use every time you travel. just recharge the card and off you go. end of story.

I always thought that you need quad band for Israel.
Can any of you confirm that ANY tri band does the trick?  THANKS

In a couple simple words, can you tell me which 3 bands to look for?  Can I easily see it when I purchase?
