Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

true, but when it's your data, or video back-up/photo back-up, then it's not about the money at all...
100%
That's why you need to have everything stored in more than one place (ie: multiple hard drives, or online backup). If your pictures only live on one hard drive, that's not a backup.
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Recover what? If it factory reset, that should not affect any files in internal storage or the sd card.

What command did you use.  dd or cat? I seem to remember that cat has a 1gb limit.

Why don't you make a bootable usb with Macrium and clone the hard drive to the ssd?
thanks macrium. Worked great. And wow the difference ssd makes.

But now I'm having Wi-Fi issues. I hope I didn't damage the card when swapping drives

Why is no one talking about this deal? Its currently the best offer out there now.

Dell Inspiron 15 i15547-5033sLV Signature Edition Laptop Intel Core i5-4210U/8GB RAM/1TB HDD/12 hours battery life for $399 starting 11/27

got this, upgraded to ssd. However internet speeds over WiFi are unbearable, I moved the laptop to a different room and it was better. However my old laptop works fine everywhere in the house.
Does this have an inferior card? Or is mine possibly damaged?

Just did a speed test in a friends office. However i'm maybe 5 ft away from the router

Drivers can be an issue. Also very possible you didn't reconnect the Wifi cables properly when you opened up the laptop. Maybe it's not utilizing the antenna.

I just added a new HDD to our server. The shared folder on it was getting to big. Now what would be the best way to move that entire folder -approx. 200gb- over to the new drive?

Also how do i redirect everyone the new drive? Do i just delete the old share and recreate it with the same name?

You can use Unstoppable copier - its a free program that, it will automatically skip anything it can't copy and report it..

Delete and rename share should be fine.

Thanks, running it now, @ approx 20mb per second It'll probably take close to 3 hrs.

By unchecking the "overwrite existing files"
Thats what I did but I also checked off "copy undamaged files first"

Now I see that only 114 out 194 gb were actually copied. Do I really have that much corrupted data? Or did I do something wrong
