Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

Probably not, I don't know the condition of the drive. Very possible some of the data is in locked user profiles?

No,  Only copying a specific shared folder. Keep getting this error

'Source – The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect'

By unchecking the "overwrite existing files"
Thats what I did but I also checked off "copy undamaged files first"

Now I see that only 114 out 194 gb were actually copied. Do I really have that much corrupted data? Or did I do something wrong
Where's a headbumping emoji?
Turns out the folder I was moving was only 114gb, however that share folder was also mapped on the server as a shared drive in order to synchronize the drive letter across all computers. Anywayu the 194gb was the drive total not folder total. Looks like everything mover over fine

Would you say Avast and Malwarebyte are the best free software to keep computer safe?

I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

That's definitely a good combination.

Do Windows Defender (aka MSE) and Malwarebytes work well together?
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

speedtest.net is the realtime connection from your device to the internet not just your local network

I'm not sure I understand the difference. You internet speed can't be greater than the speed to your network?

Separately, what is the best practice for keeping the health of your laptop battery if mostly used plugged in? I read that some suggest removing the battery when plugging in for an extended period of time. Anyone do that? Also it seems some manufacturers offer a primary AC use mode, which stops it from charging 100%. It seems maxing out the charge at about 90% is much better for the battery.

But can be significantly slower.

+1 i've seen a network that was getting over 90mbps down but after connecting about 100 virus and bot infested computers to that network the speeds went down to about 1% of that (no it's not a typo)

I unplug my laptop when it hits 100% although it makes sense that if you take it out when plugged in it will last longer because it's used less but if your plug gets pulled on for any reason your computer will shut down immediately which is very bad for your computer

The results I get on speedtest.net is about a 1/9th of the speed showing in the Wifi status window mentioned above. I dont have any viruses on my computer. What is slowing it down?

there can be many things slowing it down for example overloaded cables you can check late at night to see because then there is the least network traffic
ETA: Just an example When Lexington Tower in  lakewood was built they had great network speeds but then as it filled up the speeds slowed drastically because the cables on the street got overloaded

A filter can slow it down too

reminds me of a question. paying for 300 down from time warner cable, speed test shows consistent speeds between 90-95, tried at various times etc. time warner says its getting 250 to 275 at all times and sometimes 300. Anyway other than speedtest to independently verify?
