Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

Don't see it on BestBuy. Certainly there are other good Brands. No?
Crucial doesn't give you other buying options other than their own brand?

no.
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

no.
I would copy take all the specs they give and try to find the same from a different brand the chances of having an issue are really unlikely

Within their own brand they give me anch of options. I'm trying to compare specs, but don't understand some of the details.  What is 1866 MT/S vs. 1600 MT/S? and PC3-14900 vs PC3-12800? What does 10-10-10-30 mean?

I don't know but I assume one is better than the other for some reason but I'm on mobile now maybe I'll be able to look into it later

I did some research and all these numbers are the speed and latency however it seems that since the RAM is slowed by the FSB (which transfers data from the RAM to the CPU) generally it won't make a difference (especially if you have an older generation motherboard and CPU) and even if it does make a difference it's something like 1%

Thanks. Searching on Best Buy for 8GB DDR3 RAM gave me these 5 results. 2 are Made by PNY and are 1,6GHZ; both the same except one is low voltage???. A third made by PNY is only 1.3GHZ; I'm assuming that means it's slower. There are another 2 made by Corsair, one with 1.3GHZ, one with !.6GHZ. So it's between the 2 PNY 1.6GHZ, one which is low voltage, and the Corsair Vengeance 1.6GHZ. Recommendations?

The first thing is you need to check if you currently have 1x8GB or 2x4GB and how many slots you have total. I would assume you have 2x4 and 2 slots so if you want 16 you would need a 16gb kit of 2x8 and if not try to get exactly what you currently have

Are all wireless printers able to creat their own mini-network with a computer, or do they need an existing wireless network? I recall using a Brother that was able to make it's own network.
Yes it's called an ad-hoc network
I'm now considering buying the Samsung SL-M2020W/XAA and am trying to figure out if it can connect via a ad-hoc network?
The manual reads "
Wireless networking may not be available depending on the model (see Features by model).

-Using the WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup™) button
You can easily connect to a wireless network using the WPS button on the machine and the access point (a wireless router).
-Using the USB cable
You can connect and set various wireless network settings using a USB cable.
-Using the Wi-Fi Direct
You can conveniently print from your mobile device using the Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct feature."

It doesn't mention an ad-hoc option.

You can try a new wire but it sounds like its almost dead and you should probably not use it till you get a new one

step one: backup your data
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Try to run a check disk right click the drive, properties>tools>check now
