Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

ok thanks i will.
If that works copy all your data off immediately and get a new drive because it will happen again and this may not work again
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

Ye, turns my screen blue
So there goes the simple solution
For the next options you are best booting off of the hirens boot CD  and trying the HD manufacturers repair tool like the western digital data lifeguard tools and then file explorer in mini xp
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

Google search gave me this...

Quote
Hello,

Try this 1

Follow all the steps given below.

1) Click on the below link and download the file "AutorunExterminator"

http://en.kioskea.net/download/download-11613-autorun-exterminator

Extract it --> Double-click on "AutorunExterminator" --> Plug your pendrive now.

This will remove the autorun.inf files from drives and plug your pen drive to

remove the autorun.inf file from it also.

[Note : Make sure Dot Net Framework is installed in your PC.

OR

Click on the below link and download the Dot Net Framework.

http://www.microsoft.com/...]

2) Click on "Start" -->Run --> type cmd and press Enter.

Here I assume your pendrive drive letter as G:

Enter this command.

attrib -h -r -s /s /d g:\*.*

You can copy the above command --> Right-click in the Command Prompt and

paste it.

Note : Replace the letter g with your pen drive letter.

Now check for your files.
I did something similar (step 2 part) when all my files became shortcuts every time I plugged it in

I had something like this. But first are you running windows and what version.look in control panel and see if any process is using a lot of CPU. try a virus scan with https://www.safer-networking.org/dl/ or http://www.clamwin.com/content/view/18/46/

its a common usb virus
any normal a/v will get rid of it, or usbfix - http://www.en.usbfix.net/
files are hidden, just open cmd, switch to drive letter of usb, and run attrib -h -s *.* /s /d

When I plug my external HD (seagate goflex) into my computer, it doesn't come up in my computer and the screen says it needs to be formatted. the light on the HD goes on and it's making noise.
[No, I do not have a backup.]
What's best thing to do?

I just ordered a Monitor which has only has VGA & DVI, while my Laptop only has HDMI. Which would be better to connect through? It seems DVI is digital but does not include audio. Also is a direct cable better than an adaptor add-on?
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

HDMI is digital
VGA is analog
DVI is both digital and analog

That being said you can use a VGA-DVI cable or adapter they are the same thing
