Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

Is your phone connected to an exchange server (i.e. do you get work emails on it)? Your IT manager may have encrypted your phone and SD card, in which case they would probably be the only one that can decrypt it (besides maybe logging out of the exchange account)

Oops, someone asked me to factory reset their computer.
Now they realize that they had tons of pictures saved on that machine.

Any hope?

TIA

Plug it into your computer and run a data recovery program.

So your saying a factory reset is no different than any deletion?

Correct although if I had to guess the chances of getting all the data back would be slimmer because some of the hard drive was rewritten when it was reset
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

It might be better to use something like PhotoRec:

With these things, even if it's not your fault, it can still become your problem.

Setting up a Synology NAS.
BHPV has a kit with WD RED NAS drives or with HGST NAS drives.
The HGST is a little more.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

Hgst has a MUCH lower fail rate IMO if its a little more its definitely worth the money

I'm no expert on this, just chiming in to make sure that you've tried more than one USB port.

Great.

the next Q would be if you see it in Device Manager.

And after that I defer to the experts
