Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

My FIL had a great experience with DH data recovery. Although it will probably cost you that much (that's what these things cost). If you need the pictures desperately than you'll pay. Otherwise you don't need it that desperately

I paid around $600, but it was for a large (2TB) hard drive that was very dead. (I actually mailed it to another company first, and they wanted $1500 for it, so I had them send it back to me.)

I would think that it depends how hard it is to get the data off.

This goes back a couple of years, but if I remember correctly the whole thing took a week or two.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the price might include a new hard drive, on which you will get your recovered files.

Otherwise I don't think so

Thanks! They are most all on my other iPhone through iCloud.

Thinking to try, I've replaced battery on an iPhone before. This voids warranty though right? Then lose option of getting new phone if its not the battery.

@DH Data Recovery can I get a quote on recovery before I give up (or to give me a reason to give up)

Hope this is the right thread, what's the easiest (free) way to transfer my docs (and settings if possible) from a windows 7 computer to a new windows 10 desktop?

Urgent question: worked hours on a word document and somehow it all went blank. When I pull up the saved document it's blank. Anything to do?

Depending on how much data you have, a USB flash drive may be the easiest

Check in app data > roaming > Microsoft > word or something like that.
There's a different folder for unsaved vs auto save

Any recommendations for free DVD playing software for windows 10?
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.
