Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

Once lost data from your device. You should not add or delete the text messages in your device. If the lost data may get overwritten, which means you can no longer get back the lost data.

I've been saving my pictures and files to two external hard drives and they both died within a week. Are there any cloud kind of storage systems that I can use to save my files (upload when I have internet access) and then have access to them without internet?

Hello,

My computer crashed with a system 32 error i think it was. I removed the hard drive and connected it with a usb and using eassos (or mini tool power data recovery I cant remember as it was ~3am) I was able to recover almost every file I had besides the one I needed. The one I need is a word document of which all I have is a fragmented file. Is there a way to recover that file?

If you set Google Photos to save as high quality and not original, (which should be good enough in most cases) it is also free with unlimited storage space.

I have a bit of a 'soft' recovery issue, I'm wondering if anyone here can help.

I have an excel sheet that I'm working on, adding data to. (I often leave the file open and just sleep the laptop. it autosaves, I occasionally save as well).
I lost my about 2 days worth of entries. seems like somehow it 'autorecovered' an older version, which I must have 'approved' without noticing.

I have "crashplan" but it backs up only every few days. none of the versions there seem to have any more data.

any ideas where I can find the missing data? was it possibly autosaved somewhere?

SD card from a camera has a crack widthwise, and the lock piece fell out. I put some scotch tape across where the lock was, but that didnt help.

Is there any way to recover the pictures?

my main concern is the crack, not the missing lock piece.

missing lock piece probably wont do anything, you are correct. You may have to bring it to a specialist.

IDK if DH Data does memory cards (though chances are he does) but you can always ship it to him. I've done it with a portable HD. Let me know if you want his contact info.
