Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

Oh my! My GoPro Quik app (desktop) automatically imports all new files, and gives an option afterward to clear the SD card. I naturally wiped the card thinking that it had imported everything, only to realize moments later that a trove of media wasn't even imported. So many important pics and vids are now gone.  :'(

Anything I can do?
It is a normal recovery job. You can try software like PhotoRec (TestDisk) or Recuva (easy to use but less powerful.)
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

I'd first try with the GUI version of PhotoRec, http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec.

Pardon my ignorance. I downloaded this. What is the GUI version? Or if I have the right thing, what am I supposed to do next?

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me!

Like dsw193 says, GUI means a Graphical User Interface (as opposed to the original/normal PhotoRec which is command line based.)

I think it is the file "qphotorec_win.exe" after you extract the files from the zip file.

I found this with very clear instructrions.
https://www.ghacks.net/2015/04/20/how-to-use-photorec-gui-to-recover-lost-digital-photos-and-files/

Now the problem is that it only recovered exe, txt, cab, reg, wim, and zip type files. I did not get back any of the lost media. Am I missing something? Should I try again? Should I try something else? I guess I'll try recuva.

Hard to say, make sure the file type settings are correct.

Trying recuva cannot hurt.

Thanks. Did I lose anything by trying? Or can I try again with other settings?

Should lose anything except (which I really hope you didn't!) if you recover the files "to" the same card.

You probably meant shouldn't. No I did not. Seems like recuva is pulling up some things, but they don't give an option to save it to a different place. Will it do so automatically?

After finding you have an option where to recover to.

It just has a button "recover". I don't want to click it unless I know it's safe to do so.

ETA: I gambled it, and as soon as you click "recovery" it gives you the option to choose a destination folder.

Update: Recuva did the job this time. It brought back seemingly everything.

Just as an aside, it is possible that I never lost the pics and vids in the first place. The GoPro Quik desktop app seems like it doesn't display everything you actually have. This led me to think I lost everything. So FTR I actually wiped my SD card clean, and recuva actually recovered deleted files. I just may have had a copy of them stored somewhere on Windows Explorer. I will have to compare the files to confirm this.

Why did you delete all your files if you didn't get them back yet?
