Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

Why did you delete all your files if you didn't get them back yet?
When writing "wiped my SD card clean" I was referring to the original loss. So basically, as soon as you insert a disc with new GoPro files in it, the app will launch and automatically (if set) import all the new media. Once the import is done you have the option of deleting the newly imported files from the SD to make room for more. Which is what I did, without checking to make sure I actually have them in the computer. Afterward I realized that they weren't appearing in the desktop app, so I panicked, asked, attempted to recover, failed, recovered, and then found that they actually had originally imported, they were just hidden in some file.

I have a 2 tb Seagate internal Hard drive that is a second hard drive. It's been working smoothly for years. I keep movies, TV shows and backups of pictures on it. It was working as late as last night. I went to stream something tonight and it is no longer showing up on my computer. I swapped the cables with the primary hdd, but no dice. Any idea what could have happened?
I ordered a USB enclosure on Amazon. Any other tips?

So u swapped cables from DVD player to second hard drive and disconnected primary. Went into bios and secondary was showing up. I rebooted, connected primary and secondary no longer showed up anymore.
Gonna go to microcenter, see if they can find anything. Maybe get an enclosure? Maybe it's the data port being bad somehow? Any ideas?

noturbizniss, Recuva is good enough to recover video from HDD. Try it with Deep scan option (see here).

If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

Probably not (except normal expensive professional recovery.)

Brand name microsd card was working fine in an Android phone. Then one day pops up and says "SD card type not supported- tap to format". I tried formatting it but it keeps on giving me an error. Tried formatting on a computer it also gives me an error. Any options?

There isn't any data I want to recover on it. Just would like to get it to work again.

Is it really worth it to be busy with it?

Have 2 USB sticks. Both when inserted into a computer  the drive blinks on and off and can't be opened or formatted. When inserted into my phone I start fixing errors but it stops after 20%.

So I have an external hd that failed. I brought it to a local place who referred me to http://www.drivesavers.com/ because they have a "pictures only" option. They quoted me at $1250.  :'(

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Same here. Charged $600, and retrieved all my data, when another company quoted me $1,500 and couldn't promise results.

3rd external hard drive in 2 years just died  :-\
my external hard drives do get a lot of use, are carried around a lot, etc
I have everything backed up to dropbox as well but its easier to access my files from a hard drive when I can just plug in (for example, to edit old pictures) as opposed to having to download from dropbox
so - do I just order another one or is there a better solution?

Use an SSD/USB/memory card
are those less fragile? I need at least 1TB
