Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

3rd external hard drive in 2 years just died  :-\
my external hard drives do get a lot of use, are carried around a lot, etc
I have everything backed up to dropbox as well but its easier to access my files from a hard drive when I can just plug in (for example, to edit old pictures) as opposed to having to download from dropbox
so - do I just order another one or is there a better solution?
Dropbox isn't backup, it's a sync solution.

If your computer gets a virus, Dropbox will be glad to spread to other computers for you.

If you mistakenly delete a file on one computer, Dropbox will gladly delete it off all linked computers.

Backup software will backup all files spread through a computer, Dropbox needs all files placed into it's directory.

And so on...

are those less fragile? I need at least 1TB
Less susceptible to vibration, but anything inserted and removed from computers constantly can break.

When it's a USB cable, those are easy to replace. When the USB connector is part of the device (flash key), or the device itself is inserted (i.e. SD card) those are done - and very expensive to do data retrieval on.

You said that the files are in Dropbox. Can't you just access them from the web portal? Why drag around a physical device?

Got it. Thanks! Was using Dropbox so that files instantly get uploaded in case my computer goes. Then I manually backed up to the external hard drive. Then used Dropbox's selective sync option to free memory on computer - ended up with the files on dropbox and the hard drive.
would love a simpler and more reliable backup solution.

mostly use for RAW files that are periodically imported to lightroom and photoshop for editing - hard to do that from web portal. that's why I'm looking for a new solution, any ideas welcome...

I would need to more fully understand your workflow to give specific advice. If I'm located in your town, you'll see my number in the phone book, I'll be glad to set an appointment.

If we're in different towns, contact a reputable IT business, they should be able to help you.

Dropbox can restore your files from any point you like from the previous 30 days. You may need to contact DropBox support and submit a ticket for this to get done. Visit their website for more details.

It often goes on sale at Dell.

And people are always selling Dell gift cards for even greater savings.

Have you tried TestDisk / PhotoRec? Sometimes they work when Recuva doesn't.
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Don't format! Depending on how badly you want the files, you can pay a data recovery service to hopefully get them back.
