Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

I have a WD external hard disk drive when I plug it in its turn on and starts spinning, after a few seconds  I get a popup from windows saying  Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
and ist shut down.
no unusual noise or clicking.
TIA

See image below. HP Proliant Microserver appears to have failed. This happened as were in the process of moving online but did not complete the process and now we are missing crucial data.

How many Disks are in there? just take out the disk or disks, plug it into a USB to Sata disk\PC  and see what happens, or bring it to a Data recovery expert.

option 1 we tried . Nothing doing.
Option 2. We brought it to 3 places that apparently weren't equipped to deal with a raid array. Finally found a place but it will be quite costly starting with $700 (refundable) deposit

The raid manager should have recovery/re-building options
If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

Not a data recovery question but how to fix damaged sd, i have to 64gb sandisk sd cards that were likely killed by my galaxy s4 (i'm using a 2nd partition for link2sd) the card is not functioning normally and all attempts to format failed (format on android, quick & full on windows, sdformatter) it's no big deal as no important data was lost but if there's an easy way to salvage the cards themselves I would appreciate it

Does the sd card show up in windows? Try using disk management or Gparted to wipe the card and all partitions, and then format it.

I have a phone that got water damaged. I see a faint light when I charge it and try turning it on but that's it. Do I have any chance of getting my pictures off of it? Nothing happens when I plug into a computer.

Bury it in rice for a couple days and try again?

Phone lock (failed attempts). Phone now wiping.
Should it also wipe the SD card?
If yes, would the wiped files be easily recoverable?

Why don't you pull out the SD card if you want to prevent wiping?

SD card was accidentally formatted.
Recuva found the images but not the videos.
Any ideas for how to get the videos back or its unlikely to recover them?
