Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

I can't find the option for doing a scan before purchasing.
https://www.r-studio.com/Data_Recovery_Download.shtml

I'm using the Technician version, so not sure about the lower versions, but it's using the same recovery technology.

I can only recommend what I know is working, any other software may or may not work.

Is there any free program that can recover large files and large amounts total?
All the free ones I found greatly limit how much data can be recovered.

The only things I've heard of are the opensourced ones that are command line based

Are there clear instructions on how to use them?
If not, how about a paid program that can first scan and tell me which files (with their original names!) are recoverable?

There are many which give a list of files they found, but that doesn't mean they will be usable and also may have lost their original name.

Well, we would need a program that will show us in advance if the files are salvageable AND have their original names (as we need to sift through thousands of files to find about 300).
Any ideas?

An external hard-drive with pictures and videos won't allow for about 10% of them to be viewed or copied.
We ran disk check multiple times and it just says there are errors that can't be fixed.
What can we do to get the missing files?
Thanks.

Hard to say.
Maybe $50.....maybe even $100 if the same program can recover what was lost on the computer as well.
Honestly, not sure.
Why?

Rules out the fancy data recovery options. I guess try to find software with a satisfaction guarantee in that price range.
