Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

What's my best option for trying to recover deleted media from the internal storage of an Samsung Galaxy device?

 PhotoRec?
Recuva?
Willing to spend even 50$+ on a program to recover the one file I accidentally deleted.

Internal storage of a phone is alot more complicated than removable storage, you have to try one of these:
https://www.easeus.com/android-data-recovery-software/android-data-recovery.html
or
https://drfone.wondershare.com/android-recovery/phone-memory-data-recovery.html

which usually install an app on your phone that has the potential to overwrite your data  :(

But really the question is what phone, android version, and is it rooted?

I remember using Testdisc, or photoRec.
Which was using the CDM commands. But tried to find the actual internal storage of the device, but weirdly could not find the device after plugging it into a computer.
So those two programs wasn't much help.
Tried putting the device into transfer files, then transfer images, and the other settings hoping it would make my device searchable on the programs. But wasn't succesfull, even tried placing the device into USB debugging mode which I saw was Told to keep off.
I remember reading that they support internal storage of devices so not quite sure what I was doing wrong why I couldn't get my computer to read my device when using these programs.
Meaning I was able to read my device but when running the program couldn't find my device through the program, Couldn't find the file.
Tried recuva as well but still couldn't pull up the file for my Samsung.

 It's a Samsung Galaxy S9, not rooted.
Android version not sure off hand.

Can try those programs and see what happens.
Wonder if there's any programs  that can search complete files/folders

So it seems your device needs to be rooted for it to searchable as a file and as an external device otherwise you're quite limited to what you can search for? any downsides of rooting your device?
Found this app, officially says you can search even a device that's not rooted, but don't think it pulled anything up.

Some apps may not work (like GPay), and any apps with root access can potentially be a major security risk.
It will probably void your warranty as well.

(Not sure if this is the right thread)
I started organizing the pictures on my phone and made a different folder on the SD card for each kid. After I moved them I see they no longer have the original date rather the date that I moved the file. Is there a way to see the original dates of when the photo was taken so I can organize them by date?
Thanks

Date Taken or date created? Those are not the same.

You can also check all the dates on the file online with a site like http://metapicz.com/

The question was 1st if you can see it on one pic if there is the real date on it somewhere. If it's there, you can eventually do something in bulk.

I hear that.  I'm assuming it's possible being that a legit Tech company can recover media? Or any one in computers that knows what they're doing.

I tried all the free programs out there but nothing seems to work when trying to recover internal storage without rooting your phone.

SSD in my desktop just stopped working. I confirmed in other machines that it's dead, and doesn't even show up in software like EaseUS. Is it even with bringing to a pro to try to recover my data? What might that cost? I don't know for sure what I had on there and what I might have wanted off of it. I already have a replacement drive, but I'd have to get a new copy of Windows at least.

Is your data lost there worth several hundreds bucks? If not, starting with a clean installation of Windows on the new drive is certainly easier and cheaper (Windows nowadays would generally be automatically activated even after a new hard drive installation.)

I hear. I can always just stash it away somewhere, and if I realize later I actually needed something, look into it further then.

Thanks

What do you suggest for a backup? Online cloud? Or another SSD?

My assumption is that anything of true importance is in the cloud already. But I can't say for sure given that I can't go through the contents.

I need to recover the data on an external hard drive that does not boot up and isn't recognized by a computer.

Any leads?
