Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

you'd  be surprised! Many small offices use a regular optiplex  or precision as a server

Typically an office that has a simple Desktop that they are using as a Server its a file server, and IMHO its stupid not to have a Raid config.

I'm kidding by saying its not a server.

just means its a little more difficult to do properly - and involves replacing all the drives as well. it may be cheaper to add a raid array for data

So someone just called me asking if I could recover data off a hdd... The laptop was on a counter and was on when it fell to the floor. They had someone take the hdd out and connect it to another computer but the hdd wouldn't power up.

Any ideas?

I don't really know him or his skill set, most ppl try to connect with external USB and give up if data doesn't show up

Ok so once he checks if its picked up in the bios the next step is to determine what type of activity and feedback you feel from the drive, Meaning do you fell it spinning? clicking? not spinning? scraping? wierd mechanical/ electrical noise on a loop? and we can try to take it to the next step

Can someone recommend a 2.5inch IDE (which is what I think it is) to USB hard drive enclosure?

Preference given to amazon prime.

they're mostly pretty much the same. I've used vantec nexstar , startech and acomdata. -I was satisfied with all of those. I assume rosewill will be fine as well
