Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

Not sure this is the right place for this question:

When I boot up my Sony Z12 I've been getting the following error for the past few weeks (see attachment), the raid controller is an Intel ICH8M-e and the HDDs are Toshiba (apparently).

The config utility doesn't show me any details on the SMART event, and none of the software I've tried (e.g. HDD scan) can scan the drive. How can I diagnose this myself?

its difficult to diagnose because these machines run a striped raid on 2 SSD drives. Smart is a standardized monitoring tool for hard drives that's meant to detect irregularities etc and determine drive failure or imminent failure. SSD drives however don't really have standardized smart therefore anything don't like can trigger it. I will put up a utility you can use to test it tom....too tired.... To be continued

Honestly - They all fail - I get all companies.

If you get portable drives I would tell you don't get the ones with a built on USB connector (like the wd passports, or some of the seagates) They fail much faster and have firmware issues as well.

I try to purchase the manufacturers hard drive - meaning WD, Seagte, Hitachi and not fantom or iomega etc

built in USB connecter? What's that?

I have this: http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Passport-Essential-Portable/dp/B0041OSQ9S

Don't think it has anything built in...

@ AJK Your drive is exactly what im talking about - up to a few years ago all the external drives were connected via the standard sata port to a little board that turned into a usb. The newer portable drives, in an attempt to make the drive a little smaller, cut out that piece and soldered the usb directly to the hard drive. Although more compact it causes multiple issues since this isn't the natural interface - it has to interpert the connection thru the usb controller.

Here's a classic scenario that happens all the time - the drive gets a couple of bad sectors and starts failing, with a standard drive it will still be detected and you can properly copy off all your data however with the usb onboard drive it can't get past these bad sectors to further connect to the drive - as a result the drive powers up, but nothing further happens - you don't see any data.

They also have multiple firmware issues that cause chaos on these drives.

I believe its also because they don't want people taking it out to put in their PC.

You can try this tool

http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html

Shows "good" for both drives, should I trust it?

Shows "worst" read error rate on one drive at 99 instead of 100, should I worry?

TY. Doesn't support much for the RAID array, no smart data or anything, health data is "n/a".

They cost less because they use inferior drives - they save the better drives for internal drives and use the imperfect drives for external drives
