Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

the internet is here to stay just need to protect yourself- if you want to go somewhere you will if not its a good block
to avois unwanted ads pop ups you tube etc.
however you can do most yourself
some computers in my office have k9 and they have their own password
if you NEED to go somewhere you can go - its just a reminder so you dont slip
you can only make a first impression ONCE

Any recommended utilities for moving large amounts of data?
I want to back up an old computer, but only selected folders,I don't want to come the whole disk.

Copy-paste to external HD?

I assume from the simplicity of my answer that your question must have more to it.  I'm going to assume that your old computer won't boot up.  If so, you can use a live cd (or usb) to access the drive, and then copy-paste.

On second thought I'm having a problem. It's only copying the contents of the folder I select but not the folder itself. Made a complete mess off my portable hd by just dumping everything in the root dollar

Gotta select to copy subfolders as well, also make sure you have access to the full user folders...
Copy to a new folder on the external drive - not to the root.

it is copying subfolders the problem is when copying " D : folder x" to "G:" it will copy the contents of folder x into G without first copying folder x
You copy? :))

This must be really basic:

I connected a wireless printer via WEP--pressing the button on my router--and behold, it created a new password, or did some other thing, and I now cannot access my wireless from my laptop???

Or just reset the router, most routers have a reset pin, that you hold in for 30 seconds to factory reset it

OK, so how do I set it up again without have the wireless setting lost?

Also, the printer still prints so I was thinking that the wireless is still working??

Maxtor OneTouch Plus 1Tb external drive is (intermittently) making clicking noises and gives I/O errors. Cheap boss won't pay to professionally restore the drive, any free/cheap way to retrieve the data?

It's for my boss, and I'm not looking for a discount, I'm wondering if there's an alternative to full-blown recovery.
