Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

If its being detected by the bios and the data isn't that valuable I can try to give you some advice, just be aware that this drive will prob degrade really fast and now is the optimal time to recover the data if its important

It matches both criteria, though I should've asked sooner. Earlier it would allow me to access any data but would I/O error after an hour or two. Drive has 1TB of phone call recordings on it. I managed to transfer like 100gb off but now the I/O errors happen right away.

Just to clarify, IMHO the data is important, but since my boss doesn't need it now (though he might in the future) he isn't willing to pay to recover it.

If you want to send it to me, I will give you the Mod rate :D. Otherwise if you want to experiment with what you've got, we can do that as well.

Ok First thing you have to do is take out the Hard Drive out of the casing and use the Sata connection - not the USB.

Now we can try this in 2 way, 1 is cloning the Drive, 2 is Using recovery software.

Do you have Norton Ghost? We can try changing a few switches and cloning using sector-by-sector option.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, and thanks for your help.

I took apart the enclosure and installed the drive in a desktop, the desktop also has Norton Ghost 15 installed.

Eagerly awaiting NG instructions :)

How likely is one to recover data off a bad CD or USB thumb drive?

And how much does data recovery cost? (Ballpark figure.)

Bad CD as in scratched? If yes, how bad are the scratches?

If the scratches are not too bad you can try fixing it by applying a tiny amount of toothpaste to the scratch and rubbing in with a dry lint free cloth. Then try putting it in to several drives/players, some are more precise than others.

If this fails you can use some software tools to try to retrieve/copy the data.

Re the USB flash drive, please describe how the files got deleted, plain delete, format, physical damage, or can't find partition. Based on that I can try to help you recover the files. One thing is sure, don't use the flash drive at all until you're ready to recover the data.

Ok Asher,  Here's the first try. This will help us determine in what condition the drive is and once you report to how it clones we can see if  we should proceed with this or use deeper tools.
Connect the bad drive and a good drive (same size or larger) to a desktop. Use SATA Internal Connection - Not usb
Without booting into windows, boot into the hirens cd.
Select Dos programs
Backup Programs
Norton Ghost 11
Use normal mode.
Start Ghost
Go to options and select Force clone, (this will cause it not to abort by errors)
also select image all in options
Now clone drive to drive - make sure you know which drive is the source drive and destination drive.

Start cloning, and we'll determine by the speed and amount of errors if we should continue with this method.

Note: This is not a recommendation for most recovery situation. I never use ghost to copy a bad drive, but for someone without any decent tools and ready to take a chance and the drive is mostly full this is a place to start

My laptop broke and I bought a new one, I have some stuff on my old one which I would need to retrieve, can I just take the hard drive out the laptop and connect it to the new one with a USB adapter and get my files out of there?

yes usually, just be careful not to drop it while its running. You will need to change the permissions to access your files in the user directory but its really easy.

Actually I think I do know how to do it, if I'll get stuck I'll then ask for your help, tx.

I just connected the drive to my laptop and I get a msg that "You need to format the disk in E: drive before you can use it ",
What should I do?
