Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

Well it seems like you have some data recovery software at hand. The problem here is that this doesn't;t sound like a software issue. Software can't be used to repair physical issues.

I have a external hard drive (500gb) that when plugged in the light blinks and I can feel the drive running, I also see it in disk utility, running Mac OS X. But I cannot find the device in Explorer.

Second hard drive I have this issue with, is there an easy solution to this?

Correct, and it seems we meet again  ;) ;)

I am doing a repair disk now to see if that fixes it.

Update: Disk Repair claimed to not have fixed it, but then started working so I guess it did.

Might be the wrong place to ask this, but which external drive manufacturers/product lines have the longest warranties?

ETA: Verbatim seems to have a "limited 7-year warranty", is this for real?

I don't trust companies that don't manufacture their own drives, you never know what they use. I have drives coming in all the time for all types of recoveries with weird drives, they rebrand other companies drives and tend to use the cheapest option available at the time.

What's the longest warranty from a manufacturer (that's still in the usual price range)?

3 years for decent drives. 5 years for the better drives usually. You can buy good enclosure and use WD Black series Drives, those drives come with 5 yr warranties

Which ones have 5 years? None of these show 5 years.

Your suggestions for an affordable reliable external 500gb drive? The one I'm replacing is a Maxtor OneTouch four that is 2-3 years old (and already out of warranty). I'm looking, and all the WD/Seagate/Maxtor/Hitachi drives I see are 1/2 years.

yea, but they don't make their own drives. If you want the warranty for replacement then its great, but if you're looking for a good reliable drive you have no idea what you're getting with external hard drive manufacturers.

I  have a 16gb  SanDisk  micro sd  card  in my phone. I took it out last week to develop a picture.
After inserting it in the Wal-Mart picture machine and successfully printing the picture, I  put back in my phone.

Ever since then,  the phone cannot read the card.
 It says "memory card damaged".

I  put it into an adapter and then into pc and it reads it fine.

Any idea what the issue could be?
 Thanx.

Why don't you back it up to PC to make sure your data is safe. Then, try formatting it again and copy the data back.

I guess it wouldn't tell you if the card is faulty, but if it's just some corruption it should sort out your issues.

Its from my phone,  so there are a bunch of different files on there.  But I guess I'll do that anyways.

Another unrelated issue that I have is that when I put any sd  card into my  Dell  laptop,  it automatically slides the lock button down and therefore the card cannot be accessed/ isn't even recognized.

It seems that it's an issue with the sd  slot,  and not the card.

Is this something thats  easy to repair? e.g.  Can I do it myself?
 Is this a normal malfunction?
( It didn't always do this.  It used to work fine)

 Thanx

Nothing is showing up - what does that mean?
Do you see the drive as being connected on the computer?
