Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

Yes and it doesnt  matter because the connector type is wrong
Can you take a picture?  IIRC from what you said about your laptop, it is too new to be IDE.

I asssume you mean 6.66 free, right?  500 is obviously more than your total capacity, but nowadays you can find TB drives cheap.  Seagate and Buffalo are both very good brands.   Also, if you have internet on this computer, spend the little money it takes to get an online backup as well (carbonite, mozy, etc).  You should never rely on only one backup if the information is important.
Thank you. What is the specific name of the product? Back up disc drive? External hard drive?

I am transferring some files onto multiple sd cards, the files have failed md5 verification on two different card when I try to use them. Now when I try to copy the files again, I am getting this error  "Error 0x8007045D: the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error" where does the problem lay?

$350 is not so bad for data recovery.  Give the business to a yid, and send it to DH.
Does the drive turn when it has power?  You can try to download a data recovery software, if you are a do-it-yourselfer.  If it does not turn, there is not much you can do yourself.

DH, what do you think about making a wiki? Will take longer in the short-term but save you a lot of time over the long run with all these redundant questions.

Interesting.  I guess the Ultra-Portable ones were better (the Backup Plus was the "newer version" of the Ultra Portable).

People still don't take this seriously - ALL DRIVES DIE - it's just a question of how much use you get out of it until they die.
I opened up a brand new 1tb internal hard drive last week, and it was clicking straight out of the box. Hard drives are mechanical and they are built cheaply.

+1
One should never rely on one backup...redundancy is key.  Ideally, the backups should be kept at separate locations.
