Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

I occasionally hear a mechanical click from my laptop when switching folders in explorer,( windows 7). Is this reason for concern?

DH, what do you think about making a wiki? Will take longer in the short-term but save you a lot of time over the long run with all these redundant questions.
BUMP

It will really be appreciated by your loyal followers and probably save you time on the long run. Whaddaya say?

Have a Seagate barracuda 3TB external that's been a valuable companion. I usually back it up, but not often enough. This morning I started up my computer and the drive wasn't visible. Unplugged it and plugged it back in, and after about 3 second of spinning up, you hear a 'chunka-chunk, chunka-chunk, chunka-chunk', after which it seems to give up and quiets down. Tried removing from enclosure and connecting direct through SATA, but same noises and still not visible in disk utility (I'm on a Mac btw).

Any thoughts? Tried some disk recovery tools, but they can't seem to do anything if the drive isn't recognized. If there was no spinup or power I'd know I need to send it away for recovery, but is there anything else I can try I'm not thinking of?

I'm in Israel.
I have IDE/SATA to USB here..
Can you take a picture?  IIRC from what you said about your laptop, it is too new to be IDE.
I thought I replied to this but I see it never posted. There was another layer protecting the hard drive that I unscrewed and it fit thanks

If the drive isn't detected in the bios - no amount of data recovery "software" will help you.

The only thing you accomplish is you continue to wear the broken drive down and usually end up scrapping or scoring the platters and deem the drive completely unrecoverable.

You can't recover programs.  Program settings is possible, depending on the program.  Which programs do you need, and which program settings are you looking to recover?

I thought I would be able to use Microsoft Office and I really wanted my Outlook settings. I have emails going out for the next year in there that I have to redo
