Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

If you had a licensed copy on the original one, you should be able to reinstall it on the new one using the same code

Is it true that Carbonite Mirror Image will put the programs that were on the backed up computer onto a new computer? Meaning, if I had Microsoft Office it would be put straight onto a new computer?

David, why does my MSI netbook shut off at the slightest move? The battery lasts for 9 hours (obviously without being plugged in via charger.) I have never spilled anything on it. Everything shuts off - screen, monitor, no fan, etc.. It's mamish shut off.

It's fine if I leave it on my lap or on the desk, however once I move it, it shuts off... SO FRUSTRATING.

The netbook is 3 years old...

Possible that the battery is loose. Try moving it while plugged in and see if it happens.

I bought a no name brand micro sd card a while ago. At the time i tried it in my phone and it wouldn't mount, even after formatting, so i gave up on it. Is there any program i could use to check and see if it's corrupt?

I have an old hard drive from a laptop that went on me after a black out - was not plugged into a surge protector , at that point I paid $100 for someone to look at it but he couldn't get it to give me back my filesg was about 7 yrs ago.  Has tech improved enough that worth another shot.  Would love to get my pictures back or should I toss?

Not if it isn't recognized in the computer...

1. Yes
2. Don't know that it couldn't be done at that point either. Depends how much the tech knows about data recovery. Most technicians aren't very knowledgeable in this field beyond using a few basic software programs. You need to send it to someone with hardware tools and proper experience and equipment

The computer recognizes it. I did a full format, and it shows up as an empty formatted card. I checked it for errors (properties / tools tab) and none were found. However, I've had problems with it in the past, so I want to know if there's a more powerful programs to do a more in depth scan.

Don't bother. If its a no name brand - don't use it, especially if you had issues with it. Data is far more valuable than a card

I have a USB key that just randomly stopped being recognized on any computer. It is a Lacie 4GB. Is it easy to get the files off of it? How much should that cost?

There are a few free tools you can try before going to pay someone. EG: Recuva, TestDisk, there are more but that's what comes to mind.
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

If its not recognized at all and you don't see it in device manager - software tools wont help
