Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

I have a harddrive that had a lot of TV shows, Movies, Music etc. I lent it to my bro and when he returned it he said that the hard drive got erased. Any way to get back what was lost? I have no clue how everything got erased.
I've been successful using File Salvage.
(Not sure if they do files that large - In my case I needed to recover approx 20 deleted photos and it worked!)

I have a broken hard drive that contains some sentimental photos and files. I gave it to the guy who fixes my computers, but he couldn't get the files off. So I sent it to Data Recovery Labs, and they examined it and told me that they could get the files off for $1500. I'm wondering if there are any other professional places out there that could maybe do it for a little cheaper. I'd probably be willing to spend $500 for this, but not $1500.

Any advice?

Thanks!

I can take a look at it. I have most of the same equipment the labs have, I can usually know within a few hours how much it will run you, and I'm always cheaper.

Might be a good idea. I wonder how much it would cost to ship you the drive.

Just wondering if you got the hard drive, and if you have an update on it....
Thanks!

Got it, interesting case. Seems like a firmware issue and no bad heads. Will put it up to run further testing tomorrow. PM or email me for update

Asus R704A
Trying to get to recovery partition, boot menu or BIOS setup. Tried F2, F8 and F9 at start up with no luck.

IIRC most of Asus systems use f9 to to a system recovery. If it didn't work I would try a few more times and press f9 as you see the Asus screen. It's also possible that the recovery partition was deleted, check if you have a 25GB partition and report back.

Healthy (EFI Sys Part) 300 MB
Healthy (Recov Part) 600 MB
Healthy (Recov Part) 20.01 GB
What to load Win7. What to make sure Recov Part works but F9 will not get me into it. Trying also to back up C using Ghost but it will not boot from CD.

Did you turn secure boot off?
Ghost may not work properly if the computer was running Windows 8 - it may not recognize the UEFI partition

Secure boot is now disabled. F9 still will not get me to the Recv Part (manual says F9). Will not boot from CD.

Is this laptop one of those that require you press the fn key as you press the f9 key?

No.

Will have to try but manual just says F9. I did find an option in advance settings to reload the software. The problem is if the computer does not boot what do I do? I have a lot to learn to about this Win8 stuff. Bring back MS-DOS 3.0 and FAT16.  :)

Lol!  Honestly if you don't like win 8 I would just do a full wipe and install Windows 7. If you need help just pm me I can give you step by step instructions.

Thanks will do if I don't get use to this. I hear with 8.1 that Start button comes back and you can have it boot right to the desktop?
