Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

I wonder if copying partition using (system/bin)cat /dev/block/xyz > /sdcard/image would work. I will have to give it a try.

Data,  I just took out my internal 3"5 Floppy drive and internal CD - is there a wire I can buy to turn it into an external hardware? If so, what wires? Obviously something that has a USB at one end...

Thanks

If you can install a program on the network computer, I like BitTorrent Sync. It syncs via internet, but I think it will use your local network first if it's available. You might want to double check on that point.
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

I don't use floppy disks, lol... there are a few documents my wife needs from them, so I want to just transfer everything over and throw them all out. A waste of space.  I am asking because I just dissembled my old laptop and took out the internal floppy drive. Want to buy something inexpensive because I don't plan on using it more than once... Can you link me to something from Amazon?

Posted in the generic computer troubleshooting thread. I guess it's more appropriate here:

My SIL has a Western Digital wd10tmvv-11tk7s1  HD. The mini USB port got damaged (seems like a pretty common issue with this model). She would like to get her data of. The problem is there is no SATA connection on this model. From some google searching it seems pretty complicated to get the data off of this model. Any ideas? If I can't do it myself, any idea how much this would cost?
Thanks
Life isn't about checking the boxes. Nobody cares.

The best solution in this case is to get the USB port repaired. Their are some different methods of recovering the data but they are all more complicated not to mention the fact that the pcb does have some encryption which you will need to get around if you don't use the correct board.
