Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

The best solution in this case is to get the USB port repaired. Their are some different methods of recovering the data but they are all more complicated not to mention the fact that the pcb does have some encryption which you will need to get around if you don't use the correct board.
Yeah. That's what I gathered from my research. Can I have a quote?

He is right.
Do you have any experience with BitTorrent Sync? For some reason lately both my computers are showing "No Connected Devices". I googled the issue but found nothing.

Anyone know anything about this?

Did you upgrade recently?
The easiest is to just delete shared secret/folder, and re-share.

Probably. For ages it wanted to upgrade but had a problem downloading. I guess this time the "upgrade" worked :).
I will try that. Thanks!

OK, here's my issue: I bought a 1tb hd to replace my 320gb hd on my laptop that I bought on Black Fri in 2009. The laptop came with Windows 7, preinstalled. I transferred the data using Macrium Reflect - free edition. Now, Windows keeps telling me to verify my Windows, but it won't verify when  I try to do it online. I tried calling them up & they said that they can't help me - I need to call Acer. I didn't call Acer, because I'm out of my 1 year warranty & the Microsoft guy basically told me that calling Acer would be a waste of time if my laptop is older than a year old. My question is as follows: is there any free & easy way to verify my Windows so that I can get the microsoft updates, without the need to transfer data again from ym old HD to the new HD?

TIA!

Use the key from the bottom of the laptop. Should be fine.

I tried to validate online (http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate/DownloadValidationSupport.aspx?displaylang=en), this is what I keep getting when running the program they ask me to download:

How can I use the key from the bottom of the laptop?

Once you've extracted the file, open control panel-fonts and drag the font into the folder (you should see all your other fonts there as well)

One morning my BlackBerry Bold didn't wake up (probably a heart attack :-\)
I had there tons of information. The most important, I had in text docs written down all money people owe me (totals around 15k).

I do have the BB backed up on an SD card which I transferred to my new phone but for some reason none of the text docs were saved  :(

Is there anything I can do?

TIA
I try my best :-\

Honestly, BlackBerry are almost impossible to recover if the phone is completely gone. The best advice I can give you is try to get the phone repaired. If the phone is beyond repaired its extremely difficult to recover data from it.

Well, if he did, he can recover it using BlackBerry Protect.

which is why I asked..

Backed up how?
If they were bb memos and he used bb protect then the memos can easily be extracted from the  backup file

I had it on plain docs (docs to go).
I guess my only option is to try to get it repaired :-[
