Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

Posted this in the other thread, maybe I can get help here.

I want to install the Windows 10 preview, but I first need to create a recovery drive.

I tried using my USB stick with the Windows recovery thing, but the 'next' button is greyed out.
Seems like it doesn't recognize the USB - even though I can see it listed as my J drive in file explorer.

I just plugged in my 500gb Seagate external hardrive and I can't seem to locate any of my pictures, the folders are there but they are empty.
When I click on hardrive info it says that 40gb is used which makes sense its my pics, how would I find it. I may have to get drunk for all eternity if I cannot recover them.

I have a Kingston 128GB USB, like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BLGPMVE/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

But since I designated the USB as a recivery drive I lost almost 100GB of storage space!

Where did all my strage space go??

You formatted the drive as a fat32 and made the partition size as 32gb, I would imagine the rest of the space is unallocated disk space

Yep! I have 85GB of unallocated space.

Create new partition with remainder of space.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-format-hard-disk-partition#create-format-hard-disk-partition=windows-7

I tried follwing the instructions to create a new partition
But the option is greyed out:

Best solution would be copy all data off device, then delete partition and format full USB that way it's done properly

So it's as simple as it sounds?

-Move data from E: to C:
-Format E: drive
-Move back data C: > E:

Shows for me.
Try http://s17.postimg.org/53508eein/lalala.png

Thanks man!
My filter is blocking it.
I would have suggested something different then those above me, but I don't see the screenshot so I can't really give an opinion.
My assumption, (again, without seeing SS), is that since its over 32gb, windows will not allow you to create a fat32 partition that big.

You think he'll listen to my prayers if I supported the Kickstarter shabboss app?
