Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

Unplug, remove battery.
Skip the rice - it will go everywhere, take apart the laptop and see where it got wet and report back.
here's what I can see.
how would I remove the keyboard?

Okay so got the back lid open (pic attached) and from this side I don't see any sticky residue, but
if I look from under the keyboard, the holes where the stuff seemed to have seeped in, (see this post) would line up with the back of the board here (right center in this picture)
do I need to take that off also? is that even doable?

I have a brand new laptop and I just got an SSD for it. What's the best way to swap it?

I'm thinking use an enclosure for the SSD.
Boot the computer using Hiren's boot CD.
Ghost internal drive onto SSD.
Swap the drives.
then Boot pc for the first time.

Would this work? Do I have to first boot the PC and go through the initial configuration? anything to be aware of??

TIA

Looks fine to me, try to clean any sticky residue and you should be OK. Very possible the keyboard wont respond properly or some keys may not work if it got damaged but other than that you should be fine.

thanks!
so it there isn't likely any issue of residue on the 'back' of the board?

Option B
Start new computer with existing drive.
After setup install a free clone utility like
http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/download.htm
then clone and swap.

Any thoughts?

laptop battery question:

Battery:
4-cell, 2200mAh Li-Cylinder battery
Battery Life
Up to 5 hour(s)
Vs.
Battery:
3-cell lithium-ion (Up to 12 hours)*
How is that possible? i was under the impression that a higher cell will last longer, (i'm really not a techie, just googled abit) is it because of the lithium ion? Is the 3-cell actually gonna last longer than the 4-cell, obviously not 12 hrs., but maybe 5- 6?
