Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

do I have to change the boot option from UEFI to Legacy in order to boot from the USB?

Do I have to initialize the SSD?

I don't think Hiren's was formatted for UEFI boot, so yes, you would need to change to Legacy.
Initialize SSD?

Oh. Create a partition table :)  I don't know, it probably depends on the cloning software.  But use MBR if your current setup is also MBR.

Can you use MBR with UEFI?

had to return because machine was such bad quality -- had trouble as soon as took out of box

OK if you give me a U S machine as  most can be bought in Europe

argh.
Bootable USB wasn't running Ghost properly. Kept on crashing.
Tried Clonezilla. Booting worked but it doesn't support a seamless clone to a smaller target.

New options.

Use Gparted to shrink the big partition on my old drive. But that would be a pain as I would have to create all the partitions on the new drive and copy one by one.

Or I can boot to windows, create a recovery usb And try and restore directly to the SSD? Would thath Work?

TIA

Why don't you make a bootable usb with Macrium and clone the hard drive to the ssd?

I think you can resize the target partition. I'm assuming you have free space that can drop out.

I haven't used Time machine much, but after trying Seagate and Western Digital, it looks like the G-Drive RAID with the Thunderbolt connections are much more efficient and heavy duty for our use.

my seagate crashed while new -- will look into recovering data one day, when I get a chance.. (was a back-up). The G-DRIVE is built of more solid metal, seems smoother, quicker, etc...

"more solid metal" sounds like a physical thing.. Was the crash anything to do with that?

true, but when it's your data, or video back-up/photo back-up, then it's not about the money at all...
