Topic Wiki

Ok so my rule of determining the level of difficulty in data recovery is really 2 questions.
#1 -  is it making any noise
#2 -  is it detected in the bios if you connect it directly to the mobo

If the answer to #1 is yes - then if you want any hopes of recovering the data do not attempt to continue powering it on. It can be making noise because the heads are broken or bent and if that's the case you will scrape the platters and kill the drive beyond any hope of recovery. (data recovery isn't like the way they show it in the movies you cannot actually remove a platter and recover any data off it) And please do not attempt the Freezer Trick - it doesn't work on current drives anymore and actually introduces condensation in the drive that can kill the platters.
If its detected in the bios we can try a couple of things - and i can usually recover the data for about $250 - $799 - over 50% of the time its about $300.

Is there any way to recover pictures that were deleted from a micro SD card?
I like Recuva

Isn’t that the whole point of bitlocker, that it’s drive-level encryption with no way around it?

Yes but when Microsoft locks you out and you no clue it was there it can lead to big issues.....

Is there a proper way to wipe SSDs before selling them? I'm concerned that even with secure erase wipes that the overprovisioning space might leave data behind.

Not backed up on iCloud or Google Photos?

The only way would be with repairing it (if possible).

Apple is probably more reliable and more expensive, and the flip side with local repair shop.

So there is no real "answer'.

Also, try to first check with both such options to see if they think they can repair it. Maybe Apple is going to tell you that a new one is the only option...

A child put a standard camera SD card with about 2k pictures & videos into a voice recorder.
Apparently, the recorder formatted the SD card and now when put back in the camera it says it needs to be formatted.

How can the pictures & videos be recovered? Can the recorder's formatting be reversed?

"Recuva" recovered some pictures & videos, but not all of them.

Thank you.

I'm not an expert in this, but that might mean they were overwritten (if a recording was made).
There are some really deep and forensic softwares that aren't so straightforward to use, but that's beyond my knowledge scope.

USB Flash drive Cruzer Glide, not showing up at all when connected to computer, seems like a hardware problem, is there a way to recover the data?

I assume you tried other ports and other computers.
Does it show up in Device Manager or not at all?
Not that I know anything about this, but the article I referenced above (the full version, that is) seems to imply spending huge money on recovery from a company or spending a little money on competent softaware PLUS hours and hours of time. I can send you the full article if you PM me an email address.

Hi anyone have any good software that they actually used and recommend?
Recuva is really bare-bones and misses too much stuff, like other free programs.
I want to try ReclaiMe ($80), based on this recommendation, just want to know if anyone has a good experience with any of the others out there.
[My microSD is corrupt, any device I insert it into, asks to format, a few utilities with free preview functionality (Disk Drill, DMDE) are showing the files as recoverable, so they should work in my case, just deciding which is worth to put my $80 into, long term]

Ended up going with ReclaimMe over, Disk Drill for example, based on the recommendations, and the fact that it supposedly doesn't show duplicates. I did  notice that some other programs did show a lot of the same file (RAW/reconstructed/deleted) and ReclaimMe did not. So overall was a pretty good experience, but I dont know for sure that its superior or anything, but I can say it worked well for me.
