yosseld, they stopped doing that because people were breaking their expensive smartphones to get new ones, and it was costing too much money.
If it breaks, they'll still replace it for free, but if it shows ANY signs of physical damage (screen crack, water sticker turned red, etc) they'll claim it was not a defect and you'll need to go through asurion (100 for a smartphone).
If you have no choice, what you CAN do (and again I'm not recommending this, use your own ethical judgement), is claim it "lost" instead of broken. At least you get to keep your old phone for parts or something for that $100.
