Getting a New Sprint Phone Via Total Equipment Protection
« on: March 07, 2010, 12:10:14 PM »
I've recently received an email from Sprint that for March only there's an opening that anyone can join their Total Equipment Protection for $7 a month.
i'm on the SERO plan (the old one) and my contract ended a while ago. I'm wondering if i sign up for this service and call back the next day and say my phone is broken, will they give me a new phone? is it really that simple?
or do i need to renew my contract before they give anything...

if anyone has any experience with this, please let me know. thanx

What's broken about it?  If there's a warranty issue a repair store will fix it.
If there's physical damage you'll have to file an insurance claim and there's a $50-$100 deductible.

Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

I know a guy who sticks his phone in the Microwave, then brings it in and says "it won't turn on". No physical damage = new phone on the spot.

I don't recommend this.

Why don't you recommend it?
possibly because it's unethical

You will need to pay $100 and get some refurbished phone, if I remember clearly.

I used to have a sero plan 2 years ago and it was after my first month (i.e no warranty) so i signed up for the Total Equipment Protection and if i remember correctly it was the next day that i called and told them my screen broke and it worked no problem. took it into a store and they gave me a new one.

yosseld, they stopped doing that because people were breaking their expensive smartphones to get new ones, and it was costing too much money.
If it breaks, they'll still replace it for free, but if it shows ANY signs of physical damage (screen crack, water sticker turned red, etc) they'll claim it was not a defect and you'll need to go through asurion (100 for a smartphone).

If you have no choice, what you CAN do (and again I'm not recommending this, use your own ethical judgement), is claim it "lost" instead of broken. At least you get to keep your old phone for parts or something for that $100.

sprint allows up to three times a year per phone an "exchange" basically if your phone freezes or keeps on shutting down you call customer support and tell them you want a new one, even when its out of warranty. They will tell you to go to sprint store and have it looked at by a tech. I tell them that i did andthey said i should call customer service bc they ( actual sprint store) cant fix it. They will send you a new refurbished phone at no charge and you have 15 days to return your old one in the nevelope they send you or else you get a 200 non returned equipment charge
