Safe drinks to order at bars
« on: July 27, 2012, 11:22:52 AM »
Hey,
My wife and I are going to Puerto Rico in Aug and I wanted to know what are “safe” mixes kosher wise, that we would be able to get at the bars.

Dan,
Thanks for the suggestion, I will definitely give it a try. Do you have any other ideas maybe a little fruiter for the wife, as one drink for 3 days can get boring.

Many bars (especially in tropical locations) use fresh fruit in their mixes. I had a drink once made of I believe tequila with a slice of watermelon in it, was delicious! Use your good judgement

Cranberry Vodka. I believe seabreeze and screwdrivers are fine too but I'm no Rabbi!

Definately an issue at least lechatchilah even if the knife is clean and everything is cold. Another thing to bear in mind when Ch"V hoing to a bar is that lemon is likely a davar charif and therefore the lemon/lime in the drink is not kosher.

Lemons are a Davar Charif - so it would be an issue if they cut it with a treif knife.

Other fruit wouldn't be a problem

Edit: I didnt realize Yid posted this

There are varying modern day opinions so a random Rabbi won't cut it in this case. Many hold if the knife is only used to cut fruit or even lemons then it's kosher. This is probably the case if no food is served and it's a designated knife.

You could assume by any american place (should probably include puerto rico at least in a hotel establishment) that they have designated knifes by the bar. Same reasoning applies to why its muter to order a cold plain vegetable or fruit salad at a treif restaurant. what about a tom collins? it has gin lemon and club soda or some places use sprite to cut out the lemon (then there would be no issue of the knife)

There are modern day poskim who don't hold of a designated knife being kosher. When I learned smicha I was taught you can not rely on it. Although I hold you can :P

You can just ask them. And it should be considered masiach lefi tumoi as they don't really know why you are asking.
