One thing I tell everyone to do on the Canons is never use Auto- Use the Program mode and have it set to standard..but have it set to Vivid Color.
Makes all the shots pop a bit. I leave my point and shoot like this 24/7
thanks i'll try that!

No it def won't make all the shots much better and that's it. Thought it will help. What's your biggest issue with the shots? Fuzziness? I think 1400 tends to take a lot of indoor shots without the flash resulting in those fuzzy shots. Is it mostly indoors that you notice it not being as clear as you'd like?

A friend of mine at B&H advised me to get the G12 over SLR.
Mainly because the hassle of the extra lens and clumsy for travel.

I hear. I would try them both out for a few days and see what you prefer.  Maybe you'd rather deal with the size for the benefits.

Also, he told me that for the SLR you should be a photography pro to enjoy it, otherwise it could be too complicated to handle, vs the G12 which is more simpler for the civil lady. Any inputs on that?

I would agree that an SLR would be a bit more difficult to deal with than a G12. But I still think you'll get nicer shots with the SLR even on Auto or just set to Program with a few standard settings that you could leave for most of your pictures.

A pro will def get more out of an SLR and be able to tweak things way more than your average guy.

What are you going to be taking shots of mostly?

I'd go with an SLR. Can you borrow one from a friend for a few days?  With kids it pays to have the fast shutter. At the very least you will learn to do enough to get some awesome shots on your SLR. Even if you never quite grasp how to set every feature. You learn by playing around with it.

... With the SLR the number one reason is FAST shutter speed to catch all those great shots of your kids and just nicer looking shots in general. ...

Just a tip for point and shoot cameras that not everyone is aware of. To catch "The Moment" you really want, hold the shutter button half way (ie: on the kids face), and let the camera focus. Keep it half pressed, and wait..... When the right second comes, press full way and it should snap instantly.

If the subject is moving, focus on another item where u think your subject will be when you want the photo taken. Ie. if you want to snap a shot of ur kid just as he reaches the bottom of the slide, before he jumps off; focus ur cam at the bottom of the slide and as soon as he's there, click down all the way.

Yes, with a DSLR the focus is much quicker and the burst rate and refresh rate is a lot higher, but if all u have in ur hands to get that shot is a point & shoot, this is how to do it.

Also, he told me that for the SLR you should be a photography pro to enjoy it, otherwise it could be too complicated to handle, vs the G12 which is more simpler for the civil lady. Any inputs on that?

I disagree. I think it's the other way around. When you enjoy your SLR, you will become a "photography pro".

You can always start off using the basic, auto features with the SLR (which in most scenarios will produce a much better pic than a point & shoot) and as time goes on, start playing with the settings.

And while on the topic of point and shoot vs. DSLR, a big misconception is MEGAPIXELS. You can not judge a camera based on how many megapixels it is.

Get the T1i It will do fine and be good for a first SLR.

The T1i has less shutter lag. And is cheaper.
The T2i has better battery. And can shoot a bit faster. And I believe the screen is a higher resolution.

I'm trying to remember what else.

Nothing significant that I can think of.
