This has been going on for a long time (similar examples to the ones referenced in the EFF report have been happening for a couple of years now).

Three important points to note:
- Change passwords on your accounts regularly, and try to not re-use passwords. (You can check them on https://haveibeenpwned.com/ to see if they were ever included in a breach).
- Add two-factor authentication to your accounts where available - ESPECIALLY e-mail and your wireless provider accounts. (If someone hacks your e-mail they can essentially make purchases as you).
- Any device you put on your home network can potentially give bad operators access to your home wifi network in one of two ways: passing the wi-fi password in plain text to login to your network and/or storing your password in an online account so other devices from the same manufacturer can setup quicker.

As for the police - I had a local Police officer come to my door in March to ask if my cameras had footage from the night before - there was a car break-in down the street. In the last few weeks, I saw a notice on the ring app that they have joined Ring.
