I have a Dell Inspiron 1545. I want to completely wipe the laptop and start over. I have the Windows disk in front of me. How do I wipe/reset/format my laptop?

Some Dells have a Recovery Partition. If you do, just recover to factory settings. If you don't - Just boot to CD, when you start the install process just delete the current partitions and let it create a new partition and install. WHat version of windows are you running?

If you dont have any data you want to save, when it shows you the hard drive partitions select options and delete the existing windows partition before you continue

I already backed anything I wanted to an external HD.  I booted from the CD, now it shows Windows is loading files with a status bar on the bottom of the screen

When I get tot he screen to choose the location I want to install Windows to, what do i choose? Do I delete the existing Windows partitions from there?

Yes, it will show you the partiton. On the right side bottom I think you should see drive options, click on that, then delete

I choose my language ...... now there is a screen with Windows 7 and a bitton that says install now. There is also a "repair my computer" option. What is that?

I got it done. Thank you so much.

I heard a noise from inside. I opened it up and one of the RAM chips had unseated itself. I removed the second as well to make sure it was in securely. 1 says DIMM 1 and the other says DIMM 2. Which goes in first (underneath the other)?

DIMM1 and DIMM2 just mean slot1 and slot2 on the motherboard.
Just test it one way - if you're not getting the RAM you should be, swap 'em.

Thanks all for your help.

My system is running much faster now that I cleared out all the junk and re-seated the RAM chip.

I keep getting the following message though. First my screen goes black and then this pops up....

I don't even have Windows Vista. I am running Windows 7 x64

Any ideas?

I usually try using the pc manufacturers display drivers, they sometimes have a specific driver that works better, this is especially true with dell

Thanks I updated the drivers through device manager and so far the problem has stopped.

Next question (hope to be last);

My laptop has a built-in webcam. I cant find any way to access the webcam or any indication that the webcam is installed etc.

I do get an error message whenever I touch the laptop in a specific area near the webcam.

When I check Device Manager I see this...

Would a faulty webcam connection show as a USB error?
