Need a U.S. Passport Immediately?

You should make an appointment to be seen at a Regional Passport Agency only if:

The U.S. passport is needed in less than 2 weeks for international travel
The U.S. passport is needed within 4 weeks to obtain a foreign visa
Contact the National Passport Information Center to make an appointment or locate a Passport Agency.

go to :

http://travel.state.gov/passport/npic/npic_898.html

https://passportappointment.travel.state.gov/

I also made an appointment online. It's a long overdue option. I discovered that new appointments post at midnight, for the newly added day. I waited until midnight, and was able to pick any time I wanted in NY. Game changer.

and make a appointment you will get it the same day or the next day , (depends when you are flying) .

If you need an expedited appointment call l 1-877-487-2778 at 8 AM SHARP EST. Press 1 1 2 2 to speak to a live rep to schedule you an expedited appointment.
Trick is to press the last 2 at 8AM, rather than starting the call at 8AM. I had 2 people try it this morning- one pressed "2" at 8AM and had no hold times and got an appointment for today. The second called at 8AM, had a 30 min wait, and was told that the closest they have available is in VT.

Passport expedite
« on: July 30, 2012, 04:58:13 PM »
HI. My son is leaving for Israel in 3 weeks and now realizes he needs a new American passport (we are in NJ). The regular expedite process from the passport center in  our library says we can have it by August 24 (too late). How can we get it faster (hopefully in NJ)? Thanks.

the safest way is to just go to the passport agency in person.

That's what I ended up doing, and I got it back overnight.

Wait until it is within 2 weeks of the flight.
Schedule an in person appointment at the Philadelphia passport office.
They will give it to you on the spot and I don't think it will cost you anything extra. You need to bring proof of your upcoming flight to get them to do it for you.

OR,
you can pay hundreds of dollars to some passport expediting service.....

Depending on where he is in NJ, it may make sense to go to the Passport agency in NYC, as I did.

It will cost $170.00.

For the record, I applied in a Passport office for a child on July 10th, and mailed in my passport for renewal on July 12th.

I just got the new passports in the mail today August 2nd - only 3 weeks later!
Obviously you wouldn't rely on that when you really need it 3 weeks later, but I'm just reporting that their turnaround time is quicker than the 4-6 weeks that they claim.

The turnaround times vary depending on their load. Like you said, you cannot rely on it.

Especially in NYC.

Slightly OT, I have to renew my passport, and I'm too lazy to search (:o), what do I have to bring with me to my local PO?

Old passport and two photos.
When I went to the post office a few weeks ago, they said I only need 1 photo stapled onto the application and gave me back the 2nd photo.  They scan the photo into a computer so they only need 1. Their website says that too.

Btw, DON't PAY $10 to get your picture taken - you can get it for free!! (okay, 15 cents)
Take a picture yourself at home with a white wall behind you, make sure there are no shadows, don't zoom in too much on the head - leave some wall above it and some shoulders below it, and upload it to http://www.idphoto4you.com/  select that you need a 2x2 picture and it will help you crop it to the right dimensions and download a 4x6 (or 3x5) with 2 passport pics all ready to go! Print at your local Walmart or Walgreens etc and you get 2 passport pics for 15 cents!

Correct. Think about it - you're coming in with a passport which is pretty much the highest level of ID out there, and requesting a new passport. No more ID needed than the old one.
