Need a U.S. Passport Immediately?

You should make an appointment to be seen at a Regional Passport Agency only if:

The U.S. passport is needed in less than 2 weeks for international travel
The U.S. passport is needed within 4 weeks to obtain a foreign visa
Contact the National Passport Information Center to make an appointment or locate a Passport Agency.

go to :

http://travel.state.gov/passport/npic/npic_898.html

https://passportappointment.travel.state.gov/

I also made an appointment online. It's a long overdue option. I discovered that new appointments post at midnight, for the newly added day. I waited until midnight, and was able to pick any time I wanted in NY. Game changer.

and make a appointment you will get it the same day or the next day , (depends when you are flying) .

If you need an expedited appointment call l 1-877-487-2778 at 8 AM SHARP EST. Press 1 1 2 2 to speak to a live rep to schedule you an expedited appointment.
Trick is to press the last 2 at 8AM, rather than starting the call at 8AM. I had 2 people try it this morning- one pressed "2" at 8AM and had no hold times and got an appointment for today. The second called at 8AM, had a 30 min wait, and was told that the closest they have available is in VT.

Correct. Think about it - you're coming in with a passport which is pretty much the highest level of ID out there, and requesting a new passport. No more ID needed than the old one.
Come with an expired one and try explaining that to them...

Not sure what you mean.
The passport that you show can be expired - just not more than 5 years expired.
Application says:
Quote
Your most recent U.S. passport book and/or U.S. passport card;
 A certified copy of your marriage certificate or court order if your name has changed;
 Fees; and
 A recent, color photograph.
1. YOUR MOST RECENT U.S. PASSPORT (BOOK AND/OR CARD FORMAT).
 Submit your most recently issued passport book and/or passport card. When submitting a passport book and/or passport card with this form, please verify
that the document was issued at age 16 or older in your current name (or see item #2 below) and issued within the past 15 years.
I assume that when you apply they do a search of their records to determine if there is any reason for them to deny reissuing it. So they have some cutoff point where if they haven't checked into you in over 15 years - they need more ID to reverify who you are. If however they just checked into you 10 years ago, they can verify you easier.

Asher, No need to go to PO, you could just send in the application, old passport, photos and a check or money order for the fee and you will get it back in the mail.

I renewed my passport, and did a name change. I sent in the old passport with the court document about the name change, and got back the new passport + passport card + original document that I sent in in less than 3 weeks

Nice, I sent mine in late last week, let's see when it gets back here...

P.s. surprisingly USPS tracking is pretty current, and is showing me the envelope is already in Philly, so they should have it by tomorrow. I'm in no rush, and it cost me enough already, so I didn't bother paying the $12.72 to get the return expedited. I did say I was anticipating a trip to LHR early September, so maybe that'll cause mine to process quicker...

I didn't expedite it. I paid as follows:
Passport renewal fee: $140 ($110 for PP and $30 for PP card)
Passport photos: $8.00 (for six of them, I got lazy and nixed the DIY option).
Priority mail: $4.90 including tracking.
Total: $152.90

If I needed it expedited it would be as follows:
Passport renewal fee: $110
Expedite fee: $60.00
Expedited return shipping: $12.72
Passport photos: $8.00 (for six of them, I got lazy and nixed the DIY option).
Priority mail: $4.90 including tracking.
Total: $195.62

If it's just $80 then it's definitely worth it as the Passport Agency themselves charges $60 per expedite and they estimate it'll take 2-4 weeks.

I was shocked that it could be so low, so I called them. They said that  the government fee is $170, and their fee is $150 for a total of $320.
http://e-zpassport.com/
As you can see here, the govt fee is indeed $170 ($110 +60) so I don't see how you could have gotten it in 2 days for just $120 instead of $320!!

I just checked again and I see that I paid $110 (not 80 that I previously wrote.)
I just put 2 44 cent stamps on it (foolish as that probably was - it worked).

Now that makes sense, $110 standard fee to "Department of State" (no joke, that's who the official forms say to make the check out to) and $120 to the heimishe expedite agency (who probably pays a fraction of that to the passport issuing agency).

You also got your passports within a few days, I don't think the official way would do that for you, at least not without waiting on line for a few hours.

FWIW Costco does PP photos for like $4 or so.  Not worth going just for that, but if like me you go anyway...
What the PP card do for you if you have a PP?
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Others go for me, could they take PP photos for me too? :P

For when I absolutely must carry ID with me. I guess a non-driver DMV ID would work as well, but the NYC DMV is such a dumb bureaucracy I don't know if I have enough proof of name/address/ID/whatever to even get that issued...
