closing credit card while not effecting credit
« on: July 30, 2012, 02:46:20 AM »
I have a membership awards account for years.  I would like to close it due to the $175 annual fee.  They say that there is no option to downgrade it. I already have a blue card linked to it. Inorder to avoid effecting my credit score, is there a better option for closing this account?

closing a charge card won't necessarily effect your credit.

but why not try getting a retention bonus ? [call up to close card and ask them if they would offer you something MR points/credit to keep the account open

Does it matter what time of day you call are the night shifts better or worse for retention

retention, the way we civilians understand is a screen/system pop-up when calling to cancel card so it isn't really dependent on the rep your talking to.

just thinking to myself: maybe there are some exclusions on that, like talking to a supervisor. or,
as yeki98 said, talking to MR Dep, they might have more power honoring points

-1 and Depending which cc company. Its a special dept. That you will be put through to, who have the power to see this screen and perhaps still make changes to it.

1) he is talking about amex
2) `special department‘ ??? who tells you that ? whenever I called, its just done by pressing ...... button to cancel your card and its by the account cancellation Dep that retention comes into picture
3) have you ever had [with amex] that they `made changes to it‘
