As a sister thread to the "what did you get in your email today?" thread, I figured I'd start this one.

I got two interesting letters today:

1. EnergyPlus is offering me 25k SW for switching to them. They're a scam, and it seems they're getting desperate offering 25k.
2. BofA is thanking me for my loyalty (yeah right) and giving me a heads up that my annual fee will be billed on my net month

Anyone ever see that from a CC issuer before?

A hand written thank you note from my local BOA branch for being a valued costumer. Next I expect a form letter from corporate saying they are closing my accounts.

Why are they a scam?

Is it worth getting the miles and then cancelling?

I actually got a 25k United offer. The letter has a link (EnergyPlusRewards.com/UALNY72), so if anyone's interested they can give it a try.

As far as EnergyPlus being a scam, it's a very beatable scam, with no real risk. I did it already on a much less lucrative offer and now I'm kicking myself for jumping on it back then. They guarantee to be 7% less than ConEd during the first 2 months (which I confirmed in my bills). After that you can cancel very easily, one phone call (in which they'll try to sell you on some sort of special rate) and you're done. You will possibly be stuck with their high rate for the third billing month, but as long as you call as soon as your bonus miles post you won't get hit more than that. And while their rates are a ripoff, unless you're consuming electricity like some sort of industrial factory, it's not going to cost you anywhere near what you're earning.

They hike your rates up after a few months. Do a search, it's been discussed around here before.

Thanks. 25k UA is indeed a very attractive offer, best to do it in the winter, when your energy bills are lower.

What 50k are you talking about? There's no 50k offer for this to my knowledge...

- Got two United 65K offers in the mail. One for my wife, one for me. We just closed them in June to churn. Great timing. (They even printed your current miles balance in the mailer and your potential miles balance after applying for the 65K offer.)
- 4 $15 'great fun' mail-in rebates checks I completely forgot about. Clicked on one of those links after buying 4 $100 ticketmaster gift cards (with the twitter-amex sync $50 back on $100 ticketmaster purchase a few months ago.) Pretty good deal after this rebate got $400 in ticketmaster GC's for $140.
