The baby likely won't fit in the bassinet.

or any other ideas how to deal with the baby (and in general make the trip manageable) would be greatly appreciated.

If it's your babies first flight prepare a bottle to give her during takeoff and landing, my usually very smiley and happy baby was shrieking until the flight attendant told us his ears were probably popping

That's a problem  :(

Any ideas how to deal with that?

Is there some form of travel bassinet that I can buy to bring on the plane with me that would work?

Any other ideas that might possibly help?

Buy a seat or prepare to be miserable.

Every kid is different but yeah.
That's why I laid out the extra $425 (including the direct on the return) to buy a seat for my kid with the el Al fiasco

I don't really have the option of buying a seat for my baby.

The only way I can do this is by using miles and I don't have the miles, nor is there a third seat available with miles at this point.

What about on coach? Better of with three seats in coach than two in business

I had 120K in two different accounts, not 240K in one so that couldn't work.
I might be up to 80K in one of my accounts by the time of the trip, so I might be able to make the change then, if availability still exists.

Are the bassinets so bad that its worth paying a change fee and sitting in coach rather than trying to use the bassinets??

From what I hear, the LH bassinet (for the main return flight) shouldn't be a problem.  The UA and LX bassinets are rated for 22 pounds which I am sure is more than he will weigh, but don't seem very ideal.  (LX specifically states; "ideal for up to around 8 months".  UA doesn't clarify, but it sounds even worse.)

First off, how about bringing a car seat along and hoping for an empty seat.

I flew BA in coach recently and they had a choice between a bassinet and a sort of car seat. Both went on the shelf by the bulkhead. I tried both and my daughter 12 m/o at the time liked the car seat much better. Even if your baby wont fall asleep in the bassinet, you can place her in there once she is sleeping. It will be warm and cozy!!!

I don't think they'll give you an empty seat in business

When flying ElAl direct in coach, what are the best seats to choose for a couple with a 2 year old? Planes are 747 and 777.

I tried getting a bassinet and they said there is none available
do you think they will let you bring a car seat on the plane?

On AA No. On most other airlines it shouldn't be a problem

Based on some of the above comments I am considering cancelling paid 10% lap fare and instead booking a third seat for my baby in biz with me and the wife.

Does that make sense?

Can a car seat go in a biz/first class seat?

(flying BA 747, Cathy A330, Asiana 747 and 777, and El Al 777)
They all advertise bassinets available but don't think they'll be big enough.
Baby will be 11 months at time of travel.

Also, when cancelling a 10% infant fare - or really paying with miles instead for an actual seat - do you have to pay cancellation/change fees (Tickets booked with AA, BA, and United miles) ?

Anyone have any experience with that?

Thanks!

Make sure they allow a car away, otherwise it will be wasted miles
