Also, it doesn't help if the travel agent requests a bassinet even if it says confirmed you still have to call.

They always did this.

But isn't a big time YMMV?  I think I remember agents in the past did not want to do this because they said you have to pay for the economy plus upgrade

FYI a local travel agent said that airlines do this for infants up to 9 months old; not sure where she got the 9 month age policy
Some airlines will only allow an infant in the actual bassinet up until 9 months (I had this with BR, not that I wanted the bassinet anyways).

I'm flying Delta with a 7 month old. Tried to reserve a bassinet but the phone rep said its first come first serve to the gate and cant reserve in advance. Is this accurate, or HUCA?

you mean they will let you reserve  bassinet seat up to 24 months but will not allow you to put them in if older than 9 months?

IME I doubt they would even notice or say anything.  If they do maybe you can stuff the diaper bag into carry on

From Delta website:

Quote
Unticketed Infant/Child

If children are traveling for free, they don’t have a baggage allowance. So any baggage for the child counts as part of the adult's baggage allowance.

That being said, I doubt this will be enforced at all.

Same here. They won't allow you to take checked baggage as @shaulyaakov said, but they will allow you to take a diaper bag. Personal experience.

Do you need to shlep a birth certificate or anything, or nothing required?

PSA
Recently I was flying on Southwest and while checking in the agent said that if I don't have proof of age for my infant (any age) I'll need to pay full fare.
I was never required to show proof of age buy any other airline for a domestic flight.
Good thing I already had a ticket for him

I just book a ticket for the adults and then add a lap child later.. people say you can book a ticket for them and just make up a date of birth but I've never tried that..
