correct.  But southwest can be sticklers for proof of age if they're traveling as a lap infant.  I was hassled with a 6 week old.

I never had to show anything. That said, I would bring docs for a kid over 1, just in case

we were at mdw and the agent insisted we needed a birth certificate for a 6 week old I had to wait a half hour to speak to a supervisor who just rolled her eyes and asked the agent if the baby looked over 2 years.

I've had similar experiences with Southwest.  Best to bring some sort of proof of age to avoid delays.

About to fly with a three month old baby. Can I bring a snap and go and gate check it? I am flying with my baby as a lapchild. I read in the thread that my wife should just stay away from the checkin gate as I drop my bag off... but will I have issues at the gate?

+1 I just went to Israel with a lap child and I knew it was a pretty empty flight so I even brought the car seat on the flight after speaking with the agent at check in who confirmed that the seat in the middle of my wife and I was open.

I have a question which I have not seen brought up. How do you book a flight when the departure date is a few weeks before a child turns two and the return flight is after the child's Birthday. Do you book the ticket as if the child is one (Child in Lap) and the ticket is free or do you need to say the child is two and pay for a seat?

Haven't had it happen, but would think the way there would be free and you pay for the way back.
