I frequently have people knocking at my door collecting tzedoko. Often they're from Eretz Yisroel collecting for their wedding or their relative's wedding. Or for a family in dire circumstances because of illness. etc.
Tonight a young man came to my door saying (in yiddish- I got the impression he's from Ertetz Yisroel) he was so poverty stricken that he mamash has no food to put on his table. As I went to get money, I was thinking - Did you try getting a job?! Wouldn't that diminish the problem?
I'm writing here to alleviate my guilt. I kept silent and gave him money.
