It's a typical USB Virus. It does 2 things - 1) hides your files 2) adds some viruses to the usb in place of the files. The files aren't deleted they are hidden.
Here's what you need. First make sure you have an up to date anti-virus software. when you plug in the USB make sure not to click on anything that pops up. Run a full scan on the USB and let it remove anything it finds.
Once that's done - Use a command window to unhide all the files.

Wow,  great to know that we didn't lose everything on the memory cards - we tried of bunch of different stick and drives till we figured out what was going on.

Okay, now for the cleanup, would trend micro titanium be good enough for this job?

"Installation stopped.  Your computer does not meet all of the installation requirements,  so the installer must stop.
  • To use this software,  you must first install the latest service pack for your operating system.  Please visit the Microsoft website for help"

And once it'll have an internet connection,  should I download something instead of using TM?

Check the msconfig for a documents folder that's set to open and either disable or remove it. That should do the trick

I often find that for non-geeks, msconfig may be too hard.  I prefer using Autoruns, which I'm sure you've heard of.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902

It also loads more start-up locations then msconfig.

Another good one is ccleaner, you can disable most start up programs using it as well.

Type msconfig in the box above the start button and then click on the program to open.

Click on the start menu, then type CMD into the search box, Don't press enter, you will see on top by programs a small black icon with cmd written next to it. Right click and select run as administrator.
Now a black dos box will come up type the USB drive letter - for example if the usb drive is E - type "E:" (no quotes) and press enter
Now type "attrib -H -S \*.* /S /D" and press enter
this will unhide all the files and folders
Just did this and everything reappeared!

Thanx a lot for your help, especially the detailed instructions!!

Absolutely - So will Best Buy or any other large computer "repair" shop you bring it to.
