My brother just forwarded me a virus like email that he keeps getting, allegedly from me.thing is although it uses my name it's not coming from my email address also no one else complained to me.
I assume this means that it's more likely an issue on his end not mine

If all you get is the message that it was blocked with no error, that just means you have an external drive or usb connected. It blocks the autorun in order to minimize the risk of an infected autorun file on usb

An autorun on a non-master-partition?

Never heard of it, especially since we are talking about a virtual one (notebook won't have two harddisks).

About which AV to use: Kaspersky is the best but not made for the unitiated.

People mention Avast, but I'm happy with AVG, as its a good all round program, and not too heavy.

As mentioned earlier, I believe nortons last decent AV dates back to 2007, and after that, it just clogged up the pc, with no particularly good protection.

The last versions I used I found bothersome, especially the way they try to push in more products for you to buy.

Most laptops and computers today come with a second recovery partition. Avira sometimes picks up the 2nd drive letter and just blocks the drive from autorun - even if it doesn't have one.

LifeHacker.com  How to Get Rid of a Virus (Even When Your Computer Won’t Boot)

Any thoughts on this?
Its slow.  F-Secure has one as well.  IIRC there are others too.  IIRC there's also a bootcd called Hirens Boot CD.

See:
http://www.f-secure.com/en/web/labs_global/removal-tools/-/carousel/view/142

You may also just boot linux live and run clamav

Hirens boot cd isn't the same thing. Geeksquad has a cd that boots into its own utility and runs a combination of virus removal tools - takes about 4hrs or so, but like I said in windows 7 these are all irrelevant - all you need is system restore + combofix/malwarebytes and 99% of the time your ok

I'm not understanding, hasn't restore been around since vista?
