Didn't work as well, and Vista to me is not a version of windows to be reckoned with.

I used to use boot cds to remove viruses ages ago - but these days with win 7 system restore it makes viruses really simple to remove!
+1 i was shocked as it even removed a rootkit or at least im pretty sure it did

Depends how much time and $ you want to put in. I made a thread explaining how to clean a pc, try that first

Change your password for your email account, run tdsskiller, malwarebytes and if you still have an issue run combfix

not likely. I would run the pst repair tool or inbox repair tool by microsoft. It very often helps in this issue.

Couldn't figure out how to use inbox repair cuz I cant find my .pst files...
BUT I did some googling, turns out that Avast mail shield was causing the problem, I disabled Avast outgoing mail scan and its working beautifully. The question is whether I am now unprotected and what to do about this??

Best way to find pst is to open command prompt, and type the following commands:

Code: [Select]
cd\
dir /a /s *.pst

I mostly use the basic protection on Avast - the full protection is a little to heavy IMO

(posting for a friend)

I have an older model laptop (presario A900) with windows vista.

I'm not sure that this is virus, but maybe you guys can help me out.
Whenever I put a flash drive into the usb slot, or an SD card in the SD slot, a few select files pop up on the screen.  Those files aren't on the flash drive. The same files show up everytime any flash drive/memory card is inserted.

Besides for those files popping up, it seems like some of the times it deleted everything on the flashdrive/memory card.

This laptop is used offline,  so not from downloads or anything.  I think it started happening after a specific flash drive was used in the laptop.

Amy help is appreciated.
Thanx

It's a typical USB Virus. It does 2 things - 1) hides your files 2) adds some viruses to the usb in place of the files. The files aren't deleted they are hidden.
Here's what you need. First make sure you have an up to date anti-virus software. when you plug in the USB make sure not to click on anything that pops up. Run a full scan on the USB and let it remove anything it finds.
Once that's done - Use a command window to unhide all the files.

Click on the start menu, then type CMD into the search box, Don't press enter, you will see on top by programs a small black icon with cmd written next to it. Right click and select run as administrator.
Now a black dos box will come up type the USB drive letter - for example if the usb drive is E - type "E:" (no quotes) and press enter
Now type "attrib -H -S \*.* /S /D" and press enter
this will unhide all the files and folders
