PSA: Don't forget your child in the car!
« on: June 18, 2014, 08:03:53 PM »
This article from the Washington Post Magazine is a must read for all parents who drive.

It is lengthy and difficult to read without crying, but its importance cannot be overstated.

May G-d watch over us and protect us from these sorts of tragedies.

Makes me so so sick every time I hear this,
Always tragic and heartbreaking when this happens. We can take some solace in the fact this is an extremely rare occurrence.

הלוואי.
Deaths due to things that are technically preventable are scary high. Every year in Israel, the summer is punctuated with tragedies of this sort, drownings, people collapsing in the sun on trials etc.

The chiddush of DDF is the way Dan Deals with all us crazies 🤪

The fact remains it averages about 35 deaths per year. That is 35 to many but doesn't change the fact it is extremely rare.

Being that this number should be 0,  35 is way too high.

What compounds the tragedy is that often the parents are charged with serious crimes, and they have to go through the bereaving process while facing criminal persecution.

Not possible unless you take humans out of the equation.

This seems like a very coarse attitude to have in life.

If something isn't common don't worry, because it's unlikely to happen.

And I assume if something happens often, also don't worry, because it's so common it's just part of life.

This can be said for the happy parts of life and sad parts.

I don't mean to be harsh or talk to you specifically, but this comment just rubs me the wrong way.

I know you didn't say don't worry, but saying to take solace for that reason seems wrong.

Ouch!
solace: comfort or consolation in a time of distress or sadness.

Hashem knows the lifespan of each individual.  So when someone dies young, that, too, was Hashem's will.

When it's an accident, there's some 'fault' involved. That's why we have orei miklat. Because something needs to be fixed.  But the niftar's life was supposed to end then.

( When a child dies, the loss of potential is what makes it particularly tragic.  But the life they lived was the preordained one. )

Well Mrs. Lincoln, you can take solace that not many presidents are assassinated.

I'm sure that went over well during shiva...

I don't see what a statistically rare tragedy has to do with solace. Almost all horrific tragedy is statistically rare, does that make it less tragic and something to take solace in? Not IMHO.

Well Mrs. Lincoln, I am sorry for your loss but "it can happen to anyone".

I'm sure that went over well during shiva...

ETA: Sorry for my part, please split.
