multiple amex charge card sign-up bonuses

After spending hours and hours searching without success, can someone please answer this for me or post a link where this has been discussed? (i'm sure it has been, I just can't find it... )
I recently got the amex plat and amex gold and, after hitting both spending thresholds, i was told i can only get one signup bonus. They said they are both the same type of card (charge card) and therefore i can only get one bonus for them.
Is there a way to work around this and get both bonuses??
