Pikes Peak Colorado, crazy drive!

i was in a rental car and although there were a billion signs saying to drive down in first gear i was not in the mood of it taking so long so i just rode the brakes,
halfway down there is a checkpoint were they check your brakes and the guy told me that my brake fluid was two degrees from boiling and that if i kept driving my breaks would fail on the next curve!
I had to wait 45 minutes til my break fluid cooled, so much for saving time!!

What type of checkpoint is it? Its put there by the state? By the local township?

i'm not sure but i imagine that it is run by whomever collects the 13$ a car!

Either way it seems that it is necessary for all the idiotic tourists like me! (although now i'm a native)

O I didn't realize they collected money for it. Now it makes sense.
(I still don't understand how 1st gear would've put less of a stress on your brakes. When going downhill, the brakes are what slow you down - not the low gear)

first of all i don't think you are right, secondly there is much much less stress placed on the brakes when you do press them because you don't build up much momentum, anyways here are two more pics of Pikes peak

very basically- when you use low gear going downhill the cars momentum will be powering the engine in a sense and it slows down the car. GIYF

I drove in 1st gear all way down 15K feet of Mauna Kea just ever so rarely using the break. No easy feet after dark on a pitch-black washboardy non-paved icy road with no guardrails in a convertible!
Oh, and you have to turn your headlights off to not interfere with the stargazing facilities.

Was cool to not have to touch the gas pedal for 90 minutes downhill to Hilo though.
