nope, they half die/drop when stunned by the bulbs. If you don't have a plastic to catch them they fall in to the plates.

has anyone else, besides Yudel Shain seen this happen? I have heard of this and looked for it but could never find such a thing actually happen.

It happens in my succa every year. On a warmer night if you have regular florescent bulbs and a white tablecloth underneath you WILL find bugs on the table.
Fact is that small flies are attracted to the light. They also very often drop after repeatedly flying into the warm bulbs. These are facts.

Also, I'm not sure how you explain the pic...

Very weird, this is a widespread common problem. Yudel shain is not the first one to bring it up. There used to be a guy in yeshivas shuk giving out plastics against bugs ~15 years ago.

FTR the problem is usually at night and in warmer weather. It definitely exists in two areas of Lakewood that I have lived in.

Simple solution: Place the light fixture to the right or the left of the table. Not directly over it.

Also you want to find out if your light is too big, that sitting under it means you're not in the succah.
