I tried calling before to upgrade to business, didn't allow it. I tried at check-in, didn't allow it. Same thing at the gate. They all tell you to speak to the purser once on board the plane. That worked and I was able to upgrade. Just got back to the US this morning!

$700 to upgrade from economy to business (one way). Well worth it IMHO as the seats in business lie flat and I slept 9 hours straight on the way back. The service is nice too...
FYI they also offered me to upgrade to first class. That costs $2100 from economy. I politely declined.

On el al they took my credit card on the plane after they moved me to my new seat and charged it right there.

It's for sure authorized before they reach the gate, and if the charge doesn't go through you get detained

Worked after I explained how although I booked it back in the summer, I am disputing only because of an occurrence (my cancellation) that happened 60 days ago.
